Amrut – from the word ‘amrita’ meaning ‘nectar of the gods / of life’ in Sanskrit – is the first single malt whisky brand from India. This smoky expression has spent its days in oak barrels, after which it was bottled in cask strength without cold filtration and in its natural colouring. It starts out with smoked barley, salted butter, and pepper on the nose and leads to a great mix of barley, intense malt, and dry oak.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Gristy smoked barley, kippers with a salted butter, peppered bite.
Taste
The delivery is youthful and barely reaching puberty then suddenly an intensely malty ascendancy followed by a healthy dose of drier oaks.
Finish
A sublime finale for its sheer delicacy and elegance. The peat no more than oozes, there are cups galore of sugarless medium roast Mysore and finally, as a bourbony trail is discovered, soft liquorice and molasses sugar – easily the highlight of the experience: one of the best finishes of the year.
