The journey of Deanston whisky began with a bold transformation: turning a historic cotton mill into a distillery and using the river’s power to fuel production. This spirit of innovation continues to define their approach, favouring fresh ideas over tradition. A prime example is their experimentation with red wine casks sourced from Bordeaux, a process that led to one of the most unique and intricate expressions of Deanston whisky to date.
Each year, Deanston’s Senior Blender, Dr. Kirstie McCallum, hand-selects spirits from their impressive, vaulted warehouse, carefully choosing those that can best benefit from her remarkable cask collection. In 2016, she identified a standout 2008 ex-Bourbon cask and dedicated two years to finishing it in Bordeaux red wine casks. She then skillfully blended this 10-year-old whisky with another Deanston malt that had been fully aged in Bordeaux red wine casks for a decade. The result is an exceptional whisky with a rich, sweet profile and a distinct red wine character—a testament to Deanston’s pioneering spirit and the expertise behind their craft.

Deep russet gold
Nose
Bountiful notes of sweet grape, and rich red wine, are followed by the classic Deanston honeyed characteristics, with complimentary creamy butterscotch and a slight spice.
Taste
Rich and bitter dark chocolate opens on the palate, accompanied by hints of syrupy, treacle toffee, a deep and exuberant punch of red wine, and complimented by the sweet, honeyed malt essence Deanston is known and loved for.
Finish
Rounding off with a sweet tail and a soft, but lingering, spice of full-bodied red wine.
